Shari Lewis, Lamb Chop, and Kitten

Every now and then I get YouTube obsessions over the most random topics. My latest one started last week when I saw a report about ventriloquist Terry Fator on CBS News Sunday Morning:

My parents saw him in Vegas about a year ago and they loved him. It's easy to see why; he's amazingly good.

During that report, as you may have seen, there was a very small segment featuring Shari Lewis, Lamb Chop, and Charlie Horse. They were a big part of my childhood, through the old PBS show Lamb Chop's Play Along. I was fresh out of college when she died, and I felt the same sort of sadness that I experienced when Jim Henson died years earlier: It felt like a member of the family had left me. And then I thought, "Well, how is Lamb Chop going to go on? And Hush Puppy? And Charlie Horse?" (Personally, as much as I loved Lamb Chop, Hush Puppy was my favorite. I didn't care much for Charlie Horse).

Thankfully, Shari's daughter, Mallory, has taken over the act, and is now voicing Lamb Chop. And Lamb Chop sounds exactly like Shari's version. I honestly can't tell the difference.

Judge for yourself. Here's one of the many YouTube clips featuring Shari and Lamb Chop. I watch this particular clip and wonder why children's television these days can't be as good as it was back during my childhood. Shari doesn't talk down to the kids, and she's very creative in dealing with Lamb Chop:

And for comparison's sake, here's a segment with Mallory and Lamb Chop:

The coolest Emmys opening EVER.

It has Springsteen and Glee. Two of my favorite things. Oh, and Jimmy Fallon, too. :)

In a Muppet state of mind

Lately I've been perusing YouTube for all things Muppet. The following clip, which a friend of mine sent me, is the one that started it all. It's the latest one that the Muppet Studio has posted on its YouTube channel:

And then there's this one:

But this one remains my favorite, and is a St. Patrick's Day tradition here at The Bookkitten:

By the way, the first clip is available for download on iTunes. You're welcome.

From last night's Tonight Show: William Shatner recites Sarah Palin's farewell speech, as only he could.

Mr. T: "Treat Your Mother Right"

This video is hysterical.

It's classic 80s entertainment at its best, with its poor visual quality, bad 80s fashion, so-so production values--and of course, Mr. T.

This clip comes from a video he made in 1984. Wikipedia, that bastion of journalistic integrity, has an article about it here.

Enjoy this.

Happy Birthday, Carol Burnett!

Happy 76th birthday to my favorite performer ever!!!

Oh, and guess what? Do any of you remember how I mentioned a while back that there's a Carol Burnett Barbie doll out there right now? Well guess what...I bought one! I got my paws on it, have taken some pics, and I'll share them with you once I upload them. However, I've been so busy lately that I've had either no time or energy to upload anything, or do much in my spare time.

Meanwhile, in honor of Carol's birthday, here are two of my favorite clips from The Carol Burnett Show. Enjoy!

Carol Burnett on Ellen!!!

Dedicated to Mel, who first let me know that Carol was on Ellen today. I immediately went into Freakout Mode, but in a totally good way!

And how 'bout that Carol Burnett Barbie doll? I've GOT to get my paws on one of those!

Clip of the Week: Carol Burnett at Carnegie Hall

Carol Burnett has rarely sung out of character during her career. She has said before that she feels more comfortable singing as someone other than herself.

You're in for a treat, Kittens.

This clip, from the 1962 special Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall, is one of those rare times where Carol sings as herself.

And man, she nails it.

I mean, really hits it outta the park.

And I just love the lyrics, too.

The clip's a little grainy, but the sound quality's awesome.

Enjoy...Carol Burnett singing "In the Meantime."

2009 Oscars highlights

Dedicated to Yaya, who needed something funny to brighten her day.

In case you missed it, here are three fantabulous clips from last night's Oscars.

We start off with the opening number--my favorite part of the ceremony. I heart Hugh Jackman. But you already knew that, Kittens.

We follow with a bit featuring Seth Rogan and James Franco in their Pineapple Express personas. Freakin' hilarious.

Finally, we finish with a musical number featuring Hugh Jackman, Beyonce, Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Dominic Cooper, and Amanda Seyfried.

On a side note, I think Hugh Jackman should have a Vegas revue. Or better yet, have a revue at one of our casinos here. Yeahhhh...

Clip of the Week: Brian Williams and Jon Stewart

More BriWi love for ya, Kittens!

Here is a clip of one of the many times that Brian Williams has appeared on The Daily Show. I love the interplay between him and Jon Stewart. This clip, from July 31, 2008, is typical of the back-and-forth between the two newsmen. They're the Abbott and Costello of the news.

Italy vs. the rest of Europe

Just found this funny video link at Acts of Hope. It's a flash movie that deals with the differences between Italians and Europeans. Yes, there is a difference--or at least the video producers think so.

C'mon, click here! You need a good laugh to end your day.

Happy Valentines Day from Pepe Le Pew and Penelope

I'm not much for Valentines Day, but I love this commercial.
