Many of us singletons say, every year, how much Valentines Day is an excuse for Hallmark to push greeting cards. Yeah, it really is a Hallmark holiday, Kittens. However, it's a profitable one; according to that bastion of journalistic integrity, Wikipedia, Valentines Day is the second most popular day for card sales.
So why exactly do we celebrate the V-Day? Well, I'm too lazy to explain it myself, click here for the rest of the Wikipedia article.
For years I wore black on Valentines Day. A good friend of mine wore black nail polish in addition to the head to toe black wardrobe. I just loathed the emphasis on romantic love, and the fact that many people viewed me as an emo loser because I was single on February 14th.
Well, I may be single on February 14th, but I am NOT a loser!!!!!
I must confess that the last time I wore black on V-day was last year. This year, I decided that I was getting too old to do such a childish thing. Besides, who am I to let society and others dictate what kind of a person I am, simply because I do not have a mate?
I wouldn't mind having a special someone in my life, but I'm not willing to settle just for settling's sake.
What bothers me most about the day is that we're obligated to say "I love you" to someone, whether we want to or not. What if you just don't feel like saying anything? Why can't we express our love to someone at any other time of the year?
Mexicans celebrate Valentines Day as the Dia del Amor y la Amistad. Translated, it means the day of love and friendship. In Mexico, they honor all kinds of love on February 14th, not just the romantic variety.
Now that's what I'm talkin' about!
And so, in honor of the Mexican holiday, the Dia del Amor y la Amistad, I'd like to wish all of my friends in the blogosphere, all of my dear Kittens, a Happy Valentines Day.
(But I still wish Hallmark would cut back on the greeting cards and chocolates.)

How true you are.Valentine's Day is fun... but then... we don't need a "Hallmark" or an "Archies" to tell us what we ought to do.
I like the idea of the Mexican celebration a LOT better!
Happy Valentine's Day my friend!
The title of your post is just what I was thinking. Can we change a few lettes around??
Or not.
The Mexican holiday is sane.
Adios.
Happy Valentine's Day!
Hey, my Hubby and I have not told each other we loved each other yet today and it is 10 at night:)
We really do not celebrate the holiday. I buy cards for the kids to give in class and I bought cards to give to the grandparents from the kids.
Ditto, Kitten, ditto! I especially love the commercial I heard on the radio that said "The ONE day out of the year you can show your true love. Because those other 364 days are just crap.
