The most bizarre children's show I have ever seen

Sometimes I find myself watching kids' shows so I can keep up with what my students' tastes in television. Other times I find myself watching them out of pure curiosity.

Yesterday, I found myself watching a show out of pure curiosity: Yo, Gabba Gabba!

I was horrified.

The opening sequence features a DJ-type character, dressed in an orange sweatsuit and a furry hat, carrying a boombox. He looks around and puts the boombox down on a table.

Rather than me continue to explain what happens during the opening sequence, here it is:

I continued to watch. The particular show I watched was about sleep. The episode opened with the five main characters taking a nap. I wish I could say there was a plot you could easily follow in a sequence, but there wasn't. There were lots of shots of kids dancing and riding on toy cars, and there was a story and a special guest appearance interspersed with the puppets. The DJ character was very hyper, and tres annoying.

When the show finally ended, half an hour later, I knew it was a half hour that I would regret losing. I concluded that this show was more bizarre, and much worse, than either Teletubbies or Boohbah (and Boohbah was extremely strange). To the credit of Teletubbies and Boohbah, these shows were slower paced and very gentle. There's nothing slow paced or gentle about Yo, Gabba Gabba! I found it to go so fast, it's no wonder why some kids have limited attention.

I know that a lot of you, Kittens, who read this blog regularly, are mothers or caretakers of young children. Have you ever watched this show? If so, what are your thoughts? I don't have young kids, or experience with the real young ones, so I welcome your comments. Let me know what you think.

I have never seen that show. Thank God! If we had kids I probably would just make them watch old school Sesame Street, Mister Rogers and the Magic Garden. Thank God for DVDs!!!

Watching that, I'm almost glad I don't have cable or satelite TV anymore. What channel'd you find that on? It's creepy...

I. Hate. This. Show! In private I call it Yo Crappa Crappa.

I am just glad that most of the time, my kids don't watch the show. Whew!

I couldn't stand Boohbah, but thankfully it was only on at like 5am when my oldest did want to watch it, so he usually slept through it, and I was forced to watched only a few episodes. They were creepy.
Yo Gabba Gabba really doesn't seem to have any point that I've found. All I know is that it's got bright, flashy colors, and funny little diddies that H loves to dance to. We watch it once in a blue moon here, but I don't care for the DJ either. What kinda creepy person walking around looking like a pencil like that and actually enjoys themselves as much as he does?!

I agree with Vickie on the Yo! Crappa! Crappa! I change this as quickly as possible whenever it comes on! Boohbah also - though I haven't seen it on lately. Teletubbies, though I don't care for it, my son went through a period of time when he would watch it - and it always seemed to put him to sleep. . .hmmm.. do you suppose there was some kind of subliminal message?

Oh yeah...I've seen this show. I could not look away. It was beyond weird but oddly absorbing. I just couldn't imagine what would happen next. The songs are strange and stick in your head. And they have a cool tricks section that can be very odd. And the chracters are strange too. My son watched it a few times but it not a huge fan (thank God) but I think it is quite popular because I've seen merchandise starting to pop up all over the place.

It does seem like an MTV show with lots of cuts and changing of subjects.

And one of the creators was one of the guys from Devo, which might explain a lot of this.

Jodi: We have similar parenting styles (or would if we had kids).

That.Girl: Sadly, I found that on Nickelodeon.

Vickie: Yo Crappa Crappa! Love it!

Yaya: Do the kids you nanny for watch this show?

Amber: I'm not much for Boohbah, either, but if I had a choice between that and Yo Gabba Gabba, I'd choose Boohbah.

Mel: I like the Wonder Pets myself.

Kristi: I definitely believe there were a LOT of subliminal messages in Teletubbies.

Jenners: Are you referring to Mark Mothersbaugh? If you are, that would explain a lot...

I'd just love to see what that DJ is like off-camera...
